A while ago there was a plane doing pattern work at my class-D field that was “interesting”.

Weather was IFR with overcast 900’. Below the clouds was approx 5 mile visibility.
Important detail: pattern altitude is 652’.

I asked my CFI about it and he said it was illegal so adamantly as to discourage discussion. But, I think I see a way where the pilot could do it fully legally.

What if pilot/plane were IFR-authorized and the pilot requested “special-VFR closed pattern”? sVFR limits are 1mi vis, clear of clouds, within class B, C, or D airspace. In this scenario all requirements for sVFR are met but I’ve never heard of sVFR pattern work.

While I don’t expect “consensus”, I would like to hear the groups thoughts and discussions on the subject.
