I am very new to flying and am in the market for a first ever plane purchase. I am planning on purchasing a 7 seat plane. As you probably know 7 seat Cherokee Sixes are more available than a 7 seat Lances. The 7 seat Cherokee Sixes I've found for sale are the late '60s models. I've found a few Lances with row seats that have the flooring for the 7th seat. I prefer to purchase a plane with 7 seats, than one with 6 but has the option for the 7th.

When I mention purchasing a late 60's model Cherokee Six to other pilots I am immediately told about the high maintenance cost for such an old plane. So, is there a big difference in maintenance for a Cherokee Six late 60's vs a Lance late 70's? I understand the retractable gear presents an opportunity to spend more on maintenance, so does the 10 year age difference make up for it?

I need to mention that none of the people that have complained about late model Sixes never actually owned one, so opinions (facts) from current owners is much appreciated.

Thanks for any input.

-Chuck
