My primary instuctor taught me to pump the throttle. I've always done it. Its always worked great. Never a problem. I've recently switched my technique to using the primer and have no strong preference really. But, what I do notice as the primary difference is that when using the throttle pump technique, the engine starts fine, but it tends to rev up to about 1,200 RPM right away. Same throttle starting position after a prime and it'll start, but sort of spool itself up. It'll start running at maybe 500 RPM and slowly creep its way up. A much slower startup, with a definite spool up, as opposed to just instantly running. I'm easily assmued.
A lot of what I've flown has been fuel injected, so I'm back to thinking my way through the finer points of flying a carburater.
