Piper Lance II Gear Lights

A friend of mine just bought a 79 Piper Lance II (PA-32RT-300). He was flying it yesterday and noted that the gear lights appeared to go out when the panel lights were turned on. Yes, this was a day flight. I mentioned to him that the annunciators were dimmed by a fixed resistor and to try it again at night or in the hangar with the lights off. Any other suggestions?
