In my ongoing effort to address a high CHT issue during climb, I have recently starting researching carburetor issues as a potential cause, or at least contributing factor. During this research I discovered that for my PA28-180, Serial Number 28-4617, the TCDS (2A13) mentions that two carburetors are approved for this airframe. Both are MA-4-5 carburetors, model 10-3878 or 10-4164-1. The difference between the two is the size of the main jet orifice with the 10-4164-1 having a slightly larger orifice thereby allowing a richer mixture. Most early PA28-180's, mine included, came equipped with the 10-3878.

I am considering either changing to a 10-4164-1, or modifying my carburetor using enrichment kit Marvel 666-660, which would effectively yield the same results as a 10-4164-1, but I'm not sure if this mod is an approved mod for the PA28 since the Marvel SB states that it is for the Mooney M20.

My questions for the community out there are:

1) Does anyone out there have a PA28-180 with the 10-4164-1?
2) If so, what do you typically see for CHT, EGT during climb from SL (or near SL)?
3) What do you see in the way of climb performance (does a richer carb result is bettor or worse climb power)?
4) For any A&P's who are familiar with carbs, would you recommend changing my carburetor in order to address high CHT's (assuming cost is not a factor for this discussions purpose)?

Thanks to all who can offer advice.
