New beacon light on my Cherokee 180

I was wondering how you guys felt about the Whelen Beacon HRCFA.

I originally bought the Whelen LED beacon/strobe light, but my A&P said it isn't compatible. He says that I need to get something with the mounting base like the older "grimes" beacon.

Is there an LED version of any of these? I am adding nav/strobes on my plane as well and they are LED, would like to get a compatible LED beacon.

What do you guys think?
