Today a Mooney pilot crashed into the hills just east of the runway at South Lake Tahoe (KTVL) (where I am based).

I went down to the airport to ask the rampies what happened. It appeared, they said, that he decided to turn right cross wind when only about half-way down runway 36. He barely cleared a hill of trees then disappeared over the horizon (presumably in a stall). Miraculously there was no fire although the plane is totalled.

The pilot who died in the crash was based out of Palo Alto (near San Jose) (a sea level field). His wife was passenger and was flown via Calstar helicopter to the trauma center in Reno. I hope she is OK.
