I now have about 20 hours flying time on my PA-28-140 which I bought in late March. Haven't discovered any bad habits aircraft wise and absolutely love the bird.

Up until this week I never played with the rudder trim but I notice at cruise that I always have to apply a little bit of right rudder to center the ball.

So I decided to try adjusting the rudder trim but clockwise and counter clockwise absolutely nothing happened. Does anyone know how the mechanics of the trim work? I have searched on Google but no explanation. I came up with how to install and uninstall and a great diagram that shows the innards.

There is obviously a compression spring inside that rotating the knob, depending on direction, will compress or release but how it influences the ruder torque tube when attached is a mystery?

I also assume that removing it and disassembling would have to be done by an AME?
