Having a discussion with some SARL air racing folk, and the discussion on whether to lean at all or not when running WOT at low altitudes (1500-2500 MSL). This would be for continuous operation, not just TO.

If one has CHT probes for all cyl, lean but keeping the hottest cylinder below the desired level seems preferred.

With no CHT (and a single EGT probe) it gets more nebulous. Full rich seems safer, but won't be max power. And it will probably be too rich for best engine health, even it cyl temps should be cooler. But if you lean, how much? Leaning to max RPM on the ground prior to TO is one option. And one things that should be "safe" when flying 1000 - 1500 ft AGL.

Caveat to all: Don't exceed max rpm. T

Any thoughts from the experienced folk here are appreciated.

Thanks much, Gary
