Hey all!
My first post as a member! I'm looking at a few cheap planes right now and was looking for some advice - I'm a year into my PPL and want to get my own bird - mostly, my mission is to fly on my own schedule, eventually go through IFR training, and occasionally bring myself, my girlfriend and the pups off for a ≈150nm trip when we have free weekends. I'm currently eyeballing what I think is a fairly-priced 180. I've been in the market for about 6 months now, and I've been watching it like a hawk - being a data scientist by trade, I've even got way way too deep into modeling and estimating prices of planes, building out my own copy of the Trade-a-Plane dataset alongside predictive models for what the price of a plane ought to be (https://twitter.com/tap_deals)
So to be shorter about it, I'm hoping not to waste everyone's time, but am genuinely interested about this plane - from what I know, this *seems* like a deal of a Cherokee, but admittedly my knowledge about the model-specific gotchas that can turn a deal south is very little. Here's a short tour of what I'd love to get an opinion about:
What is *up* with the wing spar AD that Piper folks are potentially facing? Is it mostly hype? From my read of the documentation out there it sounds like a small inspection price and a huge bill for a vanishingly small percent of the fleet?
What sorts of Cherokee-specific things are huge smells for a deal? Is there anything popping out about this plane above and beyond a common set of pre-buy concerns?
I'm way more familiar with the baby Beech crew over at beechaeroclub - they maintain a prebuy checklist for those planes - is there anything similar in this community?
Would love to hear everyones thoughts!
