After working on my airplane for 5 weeks, I finally got a chance to fly it last night. Despite the glacial speed of our work, all that was done was SB1006, I removed the carpet and stripped the floor, and the exhaust was crimped with a new clamp as it exits the manifold - it was loose prior.

When I flew last night, all was normal on climb out, but when I got to about 2k feet and I pulled the power back from full to a cruise setting, I started picking up definite audble sounds that I hadn't heard before. All full power, all smooths out, at less than full it comes on and there are several nodes along the power band where things are smoother than at other powr settings. Its not downright scary, but definately unsettling compared to my previous experience.

I decided to just circle up high over the top of the airport for a bit while I played around, just in case I had an issue. Engine seems to run with no problems except for the hamonic type noises.

NOTHING has changed with the engine since I flew it back to FL from NY for 14 hours other than the new exhaust clamp installed AND the airplane has no carpet in it right now. Its just metal on the floor right now.

Occam's Razor says the simpliest solution tends to be the right one, statistically. My instinct says I am simply HEARING noises that have always been there since I now have no sound deadening on the floor. I talked to the local mechanic this morning and he told me that airplanes often sound like they are coming apart without all that sound deadening. He recommended I not worry too much until after the carpet is installed, then see how it is. I tend to think this is the solution. But...I don't know.

Does anyone have any direct experience with this? Flying with no carpet, LOUD and unsettling harmonics, then with new carpet, smooth and nice?
