This was kind of strange. My Com 2, a King KX170B, is primarily used to tune in ATIS/AWOS prior to arrivals at Class D and uncontrolled airports. Over the last couple of months, it has started to get scratchy in RX mode until I get pretty close to the transmitter. ATIS transmissions will break squelch but I get nothing but rough scratching. Once I get about 10 miles out, I can actually hear the voice clearly.

I flew the other day and had this issue, but I noticed that if I grab ahold of the inner tuning knob, the rough static fades and the voice is more audible.

Bad antenna ground? I think I'll pull the antenna, clean the base and fuselage skin at the mount, and clean up the cable connection as well.
