I was out getting current this afternoon practicing approaches under a 3000ft overcast and got to thinking. The skew-t charts showed the temp at 2500 ft at -2C. At 3000 where the cloud base was the temp was -4C. Skew-t's showed the tops at about 4000 and about -6C.
Question is since the temps in the clouds were below freezing, would there be liquid moisture in the the clouds with icing possibility or would the clouds be full of ice crystals with little chance of icing?
Somehow I remember something about icing potential between 0C and -15C. colder than -15C and icing potential diminishes. Is that right?
I have an flight in the morning and it looks like I may have to get through an overcast layer. Temps in the clouds will probably be somewhere between 0C and -10C.
