I live in the NE and at one time I rented and then owned a hangar - not no more! way too expensive for the average Joe and IMO not worth the expense - WHEN they become available 500-700/Month.  So for almost the past 10 years my Cherokee has been kept outside with a canopy and tail cone cover and with NO issues. I wash her 4 times a year and detail polish and wax twice/year.  My paint still looks great and I planned (if necessary to paint every 15 years) - new paint works out to $1000/year while a hangar costs $6000/year. I had always hoped to baby my airplanes but the situation up here makes that impractical. I even bought wings cover but never had to use them. Good luck no matter what you decide and never second guess yourself .
