Why do we need to treat civilian drones differently than other GA aircraft? Let drones that exceed FAA weight guidance for RC aircraft (and autopilot prohibition, "line-of-sight" control) follow GA rules: Commercial ops require commercial rated pilots; drone pilots need the same medicals and DUI/drug restrictions and ratings/currency; ops in non-controlled airspace require the same "see-and-avoid" capability; 100 hr/annual inspections per commercial requirements; fixed-wing drones must follow the same altitude requirements as GA, etc. Most of the rules we follow are there to protect the general public. It doesn't matter if a drone isn't carrying a pilot...people in other aircraft and on the ground are affected just the same.
