It always used to surprise me when I'd tune into an American VOR to ident it, and instead of the Morse code identifier, I'd hear a voice reading a weather advisory. Still, I can see how the service made sense back in its time, especially since the US doesn't have a common enroute VFR traffic-advisory frequency like 126.7 MHz in Canada.

Is anyone sad that HIWAS is going? Do you still rely on it at all?
