So basically another $75 per year is what I'm in for (beyond the cost of the updates) to be able to use FS510 to do updates. I know what the update procedure was for the GNS430/530, what is the physical procedure for the GTN series? A card that fits the same slot as the FS510?

The FS510 is a wifi enabled SD card and stores the data internally. When you power up the 650 it prompts you to connect to GP. When you do, it recognizes that there is a new DB waiting to install. It lists the available databases that are ready to install, you check each one and it pulls the databases over from GP. The whole thing it pretty seamless if you use GP anyway. I use FF, so I only connect with GP if I need to update. Database transfer I'd via wifi. Flight plan transfer is via Bluetooth.
