So I started with a simple Garmin NextGen GTX345 transponder installation for 2020 to suit my needs and end up half way through a new aluminum panel that will include a Garmin suite with a couple of G5's coupled to a GFC 500 AP to suit my son's needs which I'm totally against but he won.
Gone will be the trusty Castleberry standby electric AI which was the first addition to the aircraft after purchase. The only definitive answer I can get regarding the standby G5 battery lifespan is when it no longer holds an 80% charge. I suppose there is no timeline recommendation for liability reasons if one should fail early but what is a good time frame that equates to that 80% figure considering no internal failures along the way? Three years? Five? How is the capacity of a lithium battery like this determined? Is it on the display?
