Flight school won't let me choose a DPE

I am all ready for my instrument check ride. My flight school lined me up with a DPE, but our schedules are total opposites, and when I talked to the guy on the phone he seemed very cocky. The chief pilot has told me that this DPE is the person they use, and that is who I have to use.

As far as I know, as long as my instructor thinks that I am ready for the check ride, I should get to pick who I want. The DPE they want me to use is not employed by the flight school, so it doesn't make sense to me why he would be the only guy they let me use. I have talked to 2 different DPE's and they both seemed very nice. I explained the situation to them. One of the guys said he was retired FAA and made it clear that it is up to me who I ride with. He seemed surprised that the school would try to limit my choices.

From the sound of it I may have to rent a plane elsewhere in order to do the checkride. I'm very frustrated right now. I read about a couple of schools refusing to sign somebody off for a check ride based on who they use. I already have my logbook endorsement, but I still need a signature on my 8710-1 form. I sure hope they don't try to withold that if I go elsewhere because I will blow my lid.
