"How do you avoid making mistakes? Experience. How do you get experience? Making mistakes...and living thru them"

The thing I reall appreciated in E.K. Gann's book "Fate is the Hunter" (not to be confused with the movie of the same title) was his experience as a junior flight officer interacting with the seniors. He has examples of his training while in the right seat literally saving his life, and the lives of his passengers, later in his extensive flying career. It's also sobering to review the numbers of his colleagues who lost their lives during the early period of commercial flight.
