I will be attending one of Garmin's GTN training classes on May 17-18 at their HQ just south of Kansas City. I am VFR only so I'm looking for input from anyone who lives or flys in this part of the country. I would love to fly myself out there but I am concerned about the spring weather, namely thunderstorms and tornados. I would like to make it in one day but I may have to deal with morning marine layer here in CA which would delay my departure. I am planning a southern route out through Tucson and El Paso before turning northeast so I can avoid most of the higher terrain. Its going to be 8-9 hours of flying broken out in two or three legs, which likely has me arriving after dark. I'd prefer not to arrive at an unfamiliar field in the dark but at least the terrain is relatively flat. Any input about weather or routing will be much appreciated. I plan to leave on the 16th and can overnight if needed and complete the trip on the 17th since the seminar starts at 1700 that day with a factory tour and dinner.

Thanks in advance!
