A common mistake is sumping in the improper order by draining the gascolator before the tanks. By doing so, if there was water present in the tank, it can be introduced into the fuel lines.


Depending on the fuel system design, it may require a considerable amount of fuel to be drained to fully purge the lines, valves, and header tanks, etc., located between the fuel tank and the gascolator.


Another common mistake is not rocking the aircraft to help dislodge water trapped behind bladder wrinkles, seams, baffles, etc. This is really important if any water is found in the tank sample. Good chance there’s more that a bit of rocking will move to the drain.
