I'm on the market for a used DG. I have an Edo Aire in my panel now - I'm not sure the exact model number right off hand, but my instinct says its original. It precesses about 10-15 degrees in about as many minutes, sometimes a bit worse. It's old. It's tired. I've thought about sending it off to Rudy for overhaul, which would be my cheapest option, but I really want a heading bug. I do not have an autopilot, but I have gotten in the habit of setting the bug to where I want it or to initial headings to take up after take off, etc. I'd really like to gain the heading bug.
That said, I'm shopping around, new and used, and there seems to be a vast range of prices from $500 used to well over $3,500. To me, they all look the same. They have one single task. Why the huge price variances?
I thought about going to the G5 and I might do that someday, but I have a problem that I need solved now, and am trying to get a solid DG into that hole in a cost effective manner.
Can anyone recommend some quality makes/models that I should look into that will slide in and be compatible with my stock plumbing on my 140?
I'd like it to have an autopilot output, but I do not have an autopilot yet and probably won't for several years. And even then, I have no idea what kind I will ultimately get. I'd think the Trutrak, but I don't know. If all the A/P's hook up with proprietary plugs (do they?), then perhaps I should just get one with a bug, but no A/P for now. I don't think the TT even needs the DG to do it's thing.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
