My dad had an interesting issue with his 180D. Left mag check failed the other day, 400-500 RPM drop. He cancelled the planned flight and returned to the hangar, did some research and decided it needed to be overhauled. His A&P removed the left mag and sent off for rebuild (probably on my dad's advice that it was the "left" mag). It came back, reinstalled, and same result - failed mag check again. So, they concluded that the key in the left position actually TURNS OFF the left, meaning the right is the one functioning, rather than what initial logic would think - the key in the left position means the left mag is ON.

What is the normal set up? Left mag check (key), you are really checking the right mag and vice versa or the left mag check (key), you are checking the left?
