All,
First post here, so I'll give a brief background.
I'm a VFR pilot (~250 hrs) currently training for IFR and own a 1/8 share in a C182 at an airport ~10 min from my house in NW Ohio. I use it for 75% business and 25% short family trips.
I've been looking at options for the next step up and in the immediate future want to take our family of 5 (me, wife, 18 yr old boy, 9 yr old girl and 5 yr old boy) on a number of trips < 500nm. I rented a C206 available at the same airport we have the C182 and discovered that with all 6 seats installed, the baggage space is nearly inaccessible and I won't be able to use it for the planned family trips.
Another airport ~40 minutes from me has a club with a Cherokee Six-300 which I test flew today. Wow - what an airplane and what an incredibly roomy interior. I'm planning on taking the fam on a number of trips and think it's going to work out just fine. My biggest long-term issue with it is the lack of deice capability. Once I have my IFR, I will need to be flying regularly all year and deice is going to be high on my list when I finally buy something of my own.
In my limited research, I found little or no options for deice on the Six. It seems as though modern Turbo Saratoga's have deice options but I also understand they have very limited useful load. The Six-300 I'm flying has a 1,450 useful load which is perfect.
What options are there for FIKI deice on older model Cherokee Six / Saratogas?
Up until finding the Cherokee Six, my favored step up from the C182 is a Bonanza A36 with TKS. After seeing the cabin of the Six, I'm not sure the Bo is going to have enough room / useful load for the family trips. However, I'm sure I'll want deice...
Thanks ahead of time for the feedback.
