The GTN updates are very easy.  The units come with two SD cards.  You load the updates onto one card using their web site, then replace the card in the GTN with the updated one, and use that one for the next update.  Never had an issue.

With a single GTN, the Pilot Pak is pricy at $899/yr.  The advantage comes if you have 2 or more, since the $899/year updates them all (with some limits, but if you can afford to exceed those limits, you probably don't care about the price of the updates).
