I can't find much discussion of this part anywhere, but on my Cherokee, this seal is completely rotted out. I'm wondering if the lower scoop is pressurizing the bottom half of the engine compartment due to the lack of seal, reducing air flow from the top and limiting cooling. My oil temps aren't that bad, usually around 190-200F in cruise, but they do get up to 225F in extended slow flight on a hot day.

Here are some pics and the only other discussion I've found on this subject: https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/what-is-this-gasket-seal-called.81701/

Here is the new part: https://www.chaparralparts.aero/63086-00-seal-air-filter-Piper-Aircraft-NEW-p/63086-00.htm

Note: Pictures are not from my plane.
