Was told the other day that my radio is not getting out, and when someone does hear me, it's garbled. So I went yesterday to get it sussed. I found that on that radio, instead of 1:1 SWR it was 16:1, and the impedance was ~6 ohms, instead of 50. looks like a shorted coax. It has RG58 which is not the greatest coax to use in a mobile set-up anyway.
I have on hand about 100' of RG8x, so I'll use that. It's only a few thousandths bigger, with stranded 18awg center conductor, same polyethylene dilectric, double shield, and same jacket. The only thing the install manual calls for is "50ohm coaxial cable", no specific designation other than that.
