I have a Century 21 autopilot (maybe they named it that because it takes up a lot of real estate:D)..Anyhow, my understanding was that it fed off of both the AI and DG. Last week I lost my my vacuum pump while the autopilot was on heading. Without vacuum, if I moved the a/p bug on the DG to right the plane went to the right and to the left it went to the left. (it wouldn't stop the turn because the DG wasn't moving). If I centered the bug it stayed wings level. Seems to be fully controlled by the DG so my question is does it really need the AI? I'd like to dump the AI for a G5 or D10A but not at the xepnse of losing the autopilot..thx
