Autopilot pitch down

Hi,

I own a 1981 PA31 short body panther conversion with an older autopilot. The pitch up command works fine, but the pitch down does not. Is this likely a simple switch issue, or is this going to get me into the pandora's box of trying to fix a 40 year old autopilot? Thanks for the advice.
