This old bird had been languishing in a neighbors hangar for a number of years. Made a deal for it knowing it would need some work, never planning to go as deep as I have. Luckily I am a licensed A/P or this project would have been completely cost prohibitive if I had to pay for my time.
We knew the engine was TBO, but was hoping to get at least one season out of it before tear down. We did a run up on it, and it wasn't happy so we tore it down. Found a badly cracked cylinder and one mag needed adjustment, hoping that was the extent of the bad stuff. After taking all the parts to Tulsa, they informed us #2 rod journal was cracked and wouldn't clean up. After a short search, a crank was located and assembly began.
I tend to be a little OCD, and since we had the engine off, decided to pull the mount and scrub the firewall. Was able to get it very close to new again and happy with the results. This project is only just beginning, so lots more pics to come.
